This is one of my favorite courses in Costa Rica. The service is glorious, Carlos Rojas the Head Pro will treat you like a king. The staff is very well trained, courteous and goes out of their way for you to have a great round of golfing. Reserva Conchal golfing course is a Robert Trent Jones II design that’s got a mix of straightforward and tough holes. What makes this course special is the mix of rainforest and ocean scenery.

My fave hole is the 17th hole – a mammoth 210 yard par 3 whose raised tee box offers an impressive view of Conchal beach and the mountains in the back. That’s the only’nice’ thing about it – you want to hit a 200 yard windblown shot over water if you’re playing the back tees. (Do not worry, there is a 150 yard option for us mortals.)

My arch-enemy is the 10th hole. This dogleg par 4 looks easy but I was finish up in the left OB – although I teed off with an iron! Then you’re left with a long iron to a green that’s guarded by a deep bunker on the left, water on the left, prohibited on the left – guess where I hit it, the left. I would recommend playing in the early morning like a 6am tee time to avoid the heat at noon.

If you do not mind the heat, opt for the all you are able to play packages that they offer. Personally I regard myself as an one round, run to the pool bar kind of person.

If you’re having a look at living in Guanacaste, Westin at Playa Conchal should be on top of your list. It is a mature development with a real golfing course you can play today. It is also part of a beautiful resort and you’ll always have things to do there. Alternate golfing courses to Reserva Conchal are Hacienda Pinilla in the Tamarindo area.
